Visiting a Flooring Showroom in Melbourne: What to Bring and What to Ask
Choosing a floor online is a great start, but nothing beats standing on the boards, seeing them in daylight and asking someone who knows. A little preparation turns a showroom visit from browsing into real decisions. Here's what to bring, what to ask, and where to find our four showrooms across Melbourne and Gippsland.
Key takeaways
- Bring photos, rough room sizes and anything you need the floor to match.
- Know what's under your current floor, and who and what will be walking on the new one.
- Ask about floor preparation, underlay, trims and removal so your quote has no surprises.
- Our Thomastown, Dandenong and Werribee showrooms are open seven days; Warragul is now open too.
What to bring
- Photos of each room, taken in daylight, including the doorways and where the floor meets other floors.
- Rough room sizes or a floor plan. They don't need to be exact; we measure properly before we quote.
- Things the floor needs to work with: a cabinet door, benchtop offcut, paint swatch, tile or a photo of your sofa.
- What's under your current floor, if you know: concrete slab or timber floorboards, and whether there are any damp or uneven spots.
- A budget range and a timeline, so we can point you to the ranges that fit and tell you about lead times.
Questions to think about before you come
- Which rooms are you doing, and do any get wet (kitchen, laundry, entry)?
- Do you have pets or young kids, or a lot of foot traffic?
- Do you want warmth and softness (carpet), real timber, or easy care (hybrid or laminate)?
- Are there stairs to cover?
- Will you live in the home during the work, or is it a renovation or rental?
What to ask in the showroom
- Floor preparation: will my subfloor need levelling or other work first?
- Underlay: does this range have underlay attached, or do I need a separate one?
- Removal: can you take up and dispose of my old floor?
- Trims and transitions: what happens at doorways, skirting boards and where floors meet?
- Stairs: can this floor go on my stairs, and how is it finished?
- Stock and timing: is this range in stock, and how soon can it be installed?
- Care: how do I clean it, and what warranty applies to this range?
Tips for comparing samples
- Look at samples near a window as well as under the showroom lights. Floors look different in daylight.
- Stand back. A board that looks busy up close often looks calm across a whole room.
- Put samples on the floor, not just in your hand, and look at them with your swatches.
- Take a few samples home where available, and look at them in each room at different times of day.
